“Gym Class” was released on this day nine years ago, shortly after Gus returned to Los Angeles from Denver in late March 2016. Chronologically, the track serves as a creative bridge between “California Girls” — recorded during the winter of 2015–16 — and “Crybaby,” which Gus began working on in early spring while living at 1700 University Drive in Pasadena. About a week after its release, Gus and his friend Killstation shot a music video for “Gym Class” at that same house, capturing some of the most iconic footage of his career using an old VHS camera. Gus left Denver for Los Angeles on March 30, 2016, after spending weeks in the city playing shows and collaborating with artists he had met online. He returned to the same house he’d first moved into back in September 2014: 1700 University Drive. That spring, he briefly settled back in Pasadena with a group of like-minded artists and began work on his third solo mixtape, “Crybaby.” Just days after arriving in California, he released “Gym Class” — produced by Nick Brobak — to SoundCloud on April 1. During that first week of April, Gus made new music with his housemates, including the collaborative track “Homecoming,” and decided to film the “Gym Class” video with Killstation around the house. That same day, he performed at his first-ever Los Angeles show. Only a few days later, he got his now-iconic “Crybaby” tattoo above his eye — a symbol of commitment to his new project and a clear marker of the next chapter in his career. The spring of 2016 was a pivotal, electric time for Gus. He was creatively energized and surrounded by people who helped him bring his ideas to life. “Gym Class” captures that moment — the merging of one musical era into the next. Recording at home and filming on VHS in sunny California, Gus and his friends used whatever tools they had, soaking in every new experience. Years later, his close friend and producer Lederrick reflected on that time: “Everything was great, spirits were high, and the world seemed full of limitless possibilities.”
