I never had a prof tell me how to vote. It’s where I meet people who were not like me. Exactly what you said!!!

It’s bc right-wing, religious communities DO indoctrinate their kids. Especially from smaller or primarily white areas! They assume the “liberal professors” are doing the same, but they’re really just encouraging self-reflection, curiosity, and like you said exposure to people from all walks of life.

They also teach critical thinking rather than “this is what we believe”. So in reality, the indoctrination was at home and in church. When the kids learned to think for themselves and question things, they adopt different views.

A lot of the kids were already more left leaning they were just scared to ever speak up against their parents so the parents just assumed the kids belive the same as them

The most liberal or leftist of professors will see you in a class with 30 - 300 other students for 3 hours per week where they are charged with teaching you a subject. They literally have no opportunity to "indoctrinate" you.

The odd thing is the anti college group, that claims college radicalizes students. keep voting for college educated people for government

As a student myself college teaches you how to make sure you know how to research and critical thinking skills that is the reason why a lot of people who may go into college very right leave college very level

what it really is they outgrow and out learn their parents. some parents cannot handle that their child is now smarter than them, so they call them woke. no they are just educated

I half agree. I think the Internet is a much bigger force, but the extreme ideas that they gravitate towards come out of academia. academia doesn't really develop a holistic view of these issues, so kids go online and read some dog water paper telling them nonsense and the counterpoint paper doesn't exist, because colleges won't employ those potential authors for ideological reasons. so those thoughts are never wrestled with in their position. and the climate on campuses disincentives ever investigating what a counterpoint could even look like

My old boss was taught in law school by Elizabeth Warren. He had no idea how she would vote of her political alignment until she ran for office. Even the most liberal of professors are not “indoctrinating” anyone.

Small town southern kid here. The generational push to not question is so real and as you’re taught to question it’s startling and eye opening. 34 year old me would be embarrassed of 16 year old me.

Some parents are so upset their kids gain independence and begin to distance themselves from them. For some parents it’s all about control.

I know so many professors that are right of center, they just allow students to have their own views

I went to a private, Catholic , liberal arts college in Kansas (the very one Harrison Butker made the comments about women being “lied to” and “we should aspire to be wives and mothers.”). It was not my professors who changed me from the “good Catholic girl” - aka very opinionated & judgy - to the agnostic, bleeding-heart liberal I am now. It was my experiences with others while I was there. I volunteered at a nearby juvenile detention center. I volunteered for a peer mentoring program and coincidentally was paired with a child of one of our college custodians - it appalled me to see the poverty that family lived in meanwhile we were paying a pretty penny for college & I wondered why the school didn’t pay her more. 9/11 happened while I was in college and that definitely changed my views about organized religion. I have so many other “reasons why” but NONE of them come from professors “indoctrinating me.” In fact some of those professors - history and my religion professors specifically - tried to indoctrinate us towards conservative Christianity if anything. Didn’t work for me. 😏

I’ll admit it took me moving to Chicago after university. I’m so thankful my Church was a true Catholic Church and made sure I knew the facts about gang violence. That day broke everything conservative about me. I realized I was wrong and that I was not knowledgeable about the things I thought I understood. I’m glad the archdiocese of Chicago opened my eyes and showed me what I needed to know to be a true follower of Jesus with empathy and compassion for people in vastly different lives than me. I haven’t voted republican since.

I actually had multiple professors on the right and the left. They were not extremists, did not care about other’s personal politics, or let opinions impede their work. Including a republican econ professor that constantly slammed Ronald Reagan and an international politics professor that advocated for expanding DEI. People don’t realize just how much professors separate their politics from their research, or how education makes people less fanatic.
