I have a beautiful pot of mums that were gifted to me. No information at all came with it. Is there a way I can find out if they are annual or perennial?

Don’t be so uptight :
Zone 6A, when we buy our Mum’s, we plant them in the container (plant and all) in the ground after they have bloomed we pull the pot back out and put them inside the garage (non-heated) water them maybe three times during the winter, in the spring they start to regrow, but you have to harden them off before taking them outside to permanently plant. Hope this helps.

What do they look like in the ground when they are dormant? do you trim them all the way down to the base?

put a 6 inch mom pot in the ground last year. this year its close to 3 feet in diameter.

I only plant perennial mums in the spring, I keep them trimmed down all summer then let them grow in August! They come back every year! The mums I buy in the fall are just for decoration on my porch.
