Operation Slipper remains one of the most controversial campaigns involving the regiment and the Australian Defence Force during the Afghanistan deployment. In November 2020, the Brereton Report was released, investigating ADF activities from 2005 to 2016. It confirmed credible evidence of 23 incidents where over 30 non-legitimate individuals were “removed” through unauthorized means, with two others subjected to severe mistreatment. The report mentions 25 ADF personnel, including members of SASR, connected to these incidents. On May 28, 2012, in the village of Deh Jawz‑e Hasanzai, Uruzgan province, a group from SASR’s 3rd Squadron, Rotation 17, landed by Black Hawk helicopters as part of a mission codenamed Objective Young Akira. Their task was to locate and detain a suspected militant linked to radical forces. After landing, the operators moved on foot through fields and irrigation lines, tracking the individual. Reports later stated they spotted a suspicious figure in a field who was allegedly posing a threat. The K9 operator released the service dog toward the "target" as the team got closer. The figure was lying on their back, showing no active resistance and holding nothing that visibly indicated a threat. One of the nearby operators asked his comrade or possibly a superior whether he should proceed with the act. Receiving no objection, the operator engaged with controlled force. The dog ran toward the "target" but was promptly recalled. The initial ADF investigation ruled this act as lawful self-defence, referencing claims of a radio and "tactile movement" by the target. These claims were later challenged during a hearing, where a former SASR member testified that the situation seemed controlled and the "target" could have been restrained instead. He also stated there was no clear movement or visible threat in the person’s hands. In March 2023, one of the operators involved was arrested and charged with actions classified as violations of rules of engagement, marking the first such case in Australian history. If convicted, he faces a life sentence. Several others were also investigated and accused of violations involving non-legitimate individuals and of pressuring rookies. Some soldiers had their awards revoked, and demotions were considered. One particular soldier, once seen as highly decorated, drew special attention, yet despite the accusations, received no punishment. This happened in more than one case. It was also reported that some operators who were not involved in any wrongdoing suffered consequences as well their awards and ranks were stripped due to broader internal decisions made during the fallout. The Chief of the Defence Force publicly apologized for the "possible misconduct of Australian soldiers" and described the incidents as a result of a "distorted culture" that undermined the moral integrity of the Australian military. Unfortunately, such situations are not unique and have occurred across special forces and militaries worldwide. They’ve happened before and will likely happen again. The SASR remains a highly skilled and professional unit, but incidents like this inevitably affect public perception.
