No I think that your analysis is really prescient. I’m studying memes for a poli sci dissertation (plz don’t throw tomatoes), and it’s very clear that the three things that matter are the political ideology and affect, but the memes matter most (different memes cause a greater reaction than literally anything else). Obvious but important.

It matters a LOT when the president is using it as a vehicle to declare actual war on the opposing party. I think it’s extremely important to make the distinction. No maga is going to think about any of this with this level of nuance. It only matters to them whether or not he was on the left. Period.

It's maddening to watch MSM debate this as a left-right issue and try to parse out how parts of his life point to left or right wing views. If he was active in this part of the Internet, the whole thing was done for the lolz. That's it. And the long term remedy for that kind of nihilistic violence is different than the remedy for political violence based on ideology.

In matters insomuch as it's being used an excused to crack down on the left. They're obviously going to try to do that anyway but it is worth refuting them when they're straight up lying about things. But yeah it's a little early to have a full grasp on the political motivations here, if they're coherent at all.
