This line really hits hard cause you know that he was always ashamed that he never admitted/believed that Newt was his son until the end and for that he believed his name was tarnished and Newt deserved better then his name

Google what happened to Newt after he got the horse only McCall could ride, the story is he was thrown and broke his neck, was unalived by that horse. Google who the Lonesome Dove, it was Newt.

Two men steal a couple thousand head of cattle, 200 plus horses from a thief they know stole them from someone in Texas (rightful owners)....and then hang one of their best friends for riding with horse thieves while their driving stolen cattle and stolen horses. Then, the "strong man" Call refuses to acknowledge his own son, refuses to acknowledge the woman who loved him...and let her die a terrible death. Call beats up a Scout for beating up Newt and says he "Won't tolerate rude behavior in a man but yet treats everyone around him with rudeness and disdain. Its a story of two very dysfunctional friends and comrades and a good story it is. But they were not men to idolize.... Having grown up 15 miles from Archer City and the home of McMurtry I'm a huge fan. Of both Lonesome Dove and all his works. Yet, most can't recognize that Leaving Cheyenne, Horseman Pass By, and Duanes Depressed are without a doubt...his best work...they cling to the two most dysfunctional characters that ever graced the pages of fiction....
