@possiblyatherapist: Intellectualization is a psychological defense mechanism where a person uses EXCESSIVE logic, reasoning, and analyzation to avoid expressing or experiencing their emotions. We need to respect our defense mechanisisms, theyre there for a reason!!! They’re trying to help us but one of the first signs of healing is when a defense mechanism starts to loosen it’s grip and it does that only because the person feels its safe enough to do so. Try picturing this: you’re a house that all of your feelings have a time share too. They have a right to be there, they come, they go. If you lock them out they’re going to throw a fit until you let them in. Banging on the doors, breaking windows, etc. Let them do their visit and let them leave, so what if they leave a bit of a mess, we can just clean up. If this helps guys check out DBT, there’s a workbook in my TT shop or you can just check out vids on youtube. What are your thoughts? Have you guys experienced this? My last therapist told me that she longs for the day I truly get angry at someone, because that means I’m finally healing.

Out of nowhere- 5 years with my therapist and grief is suddenly overriding my intellectualizing. In short, I’m not having fun anymore.

I've learned feelings are visitors. I let them come and go I control my mind, they are just passing through to show me things.... acknowledge them and their purpose if you can and let them go

Oh! so I should actually f e e l rather than coming up w the reasons why I feel and shrugging them off bc it’s easier to do that than actually feel hurt? nah can’t be right

The most mine gets is “I feel like…but then again I know I’m probably just having anxiety because (insert possible cause) is being triggered. So you know I just have to breathe and let myself process that”

when the therapist says "lets just sit in that feeling" and now I realize why therapy is hard 🤣

No longer being in a dissociative state and achingly feeling the emotions I hate……it’s not rewarding and terrifying 😂

Ok so… is it weird that I both intellectualize and emotionally inspect my problems? Like I intellectualize WHY it happened and why it made me feel the way it did, but I also take an emotional angle and contemplate how it truly felt and what emotions caused what thoughts, etc.

It took me years to understand that this was actually the goal 💀 The next step is the constant battle over where to set your own boundaries using your actual feelings and not your understanding of things 😭😭😭
