Christians worship on Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. All four Gospels explicitly state that the resurrection happened on Sunday, not on the Sabbath. This is not a minor detail; the resurrection is the foundation of the Christian faith and marks the beginning of the new creation. Just as the first creation began in Genesis, the new creation began with Christ rising on Sunday. That is why the day of worship changed—because redemption is greater than creation. The New Testament itself shows that the apostles already gathered on Sunday for worship. In Acts 20:7 it clearly says that on the first day of the week the disciples gathered to break bread, which refers to the Lord’s Supper. This was not casual fellowship but formal worship. In 1 Corinthians 16:2 Paul instructs believers to set aside their offerings on the first day of the week, showing that Sunday was already the established day of Christian assembly across the churches. Revelation 1:10 confirms this even further when John says he was in the Spirit on “the Lord’s Day.” The Sabbath is never called the Lord’s Day anywhere in Scripture. This new term appears only after the resurrection and was universally understood by the early Church as referring to Sunday, the day of Christ’s victory over death. The Bible also teaches that the Sabbath was a shadow pointing to Christ, not an eternal legal requirement for Christians. Colossians 2:16–17 clearly says that no one is to judge believers regarding Sabbaths because these were shadows, but the substance is Christ. Romans 10:4 states that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. Hebrews 4 explains that the true rest of God is now entered through faith in Christ, not through keeping a specific day of the week. The real Sabbath is not a day—it is a Person.
