Cantinflas played a lovable buffoon who used wordplay to deliberately misunderstand and mock the elite. He intentionally presented himself in common clothes that were tattered and a distinguished mustache. He was loved and hated for this! The wealthy loved that he was keeping the working class entertained and distracted from Class Inequality, but they hated that he was becoming wealthy himself from doing so! The Working Man loved him for mocking the rich and understanding their sentiments when it came to class inequality. His persona “Cantinflas” was born from a heckler but the lore is unclear - Perhaps someone shouted out “Canta o le inflas?” - “Are you singing or getting drunk?” Or maybe “Ya callaté cantinflas!” “Shut up cantinflas!” Either way - Mario Moreno took the name and absolutely ran with it! He’s starred in over 50 films both in Mexico and Hollywood, including but not limited to Around the World in 80 Days, Pepe, Ali es mi Tierra (first film!) as well as has his own cartoon “The Cantinflas Show” and showed up on “What’s My Line?” His lovable character eventually lost its satire appeal as Americans misunderstood the comedy and began to genuinely associate Mexican Culture with the slovenly and unemployed character of Cantinflas.
