Personally I think the Sabrina Carpenter saga is more cynical than this. Being dismissive of criticism sent the message that she exists outside of culture wars, which broadens her audience. Refusing to engage outright with socio-political discourse (whilst dropping oblique hints of a progressive-ish pop-feminist position) is how Taylor Swift maintains both progressive AND Conservative audiences. This could also be seen as a deliberate way to alienate more politically inclined fans who expect their favourite celebrities to hold firm political positions: not having those people in your fan base means you're never drawn into controversial conversations, so it de-risks your product and grows your potential audience.

I think this could be a shift in politics with gen z and gen alpha being more 'conservative' (with a lower case c), and its a display in those shifts for a younger audience

I just miss that wink to the audience in her cover that is so prevalent in all of her other media. This cover and her weak explaination of its intended meaning really missed the mark for me

totally agree! but I also think the debate around her album cover was really U.S coded, in the sense that Latin music is always more sexual (with the good and the bad of that). The response of some people seem a little "prude" to me, as someone not from the U.S. At the same time, I think new generations are too sometimes too literal and struggle to read between lines when it comes to artists

I think everyone got mad at her for the wrong reasons, in her Mexico tour she said, and I translate this as a native Spanish speaker, “I’m full grown but look like a kid, come put something neat in my little house”, that plus the Lolita photoshoot makes it seem like she’s trying to lean into pdfiles fantasies
