@scribblemouth_: 🟰Does 0.999… ACTUALLY equal 1? 🧠While the answer is yes, the question itself brings up interesting topics surrounding numbers and the nature of infinity! #education #facts #math #maths #mathematics Music 🎵: Apollo Jazz - Saturn Lounge
can't we just say the answer is 3 and call it a day

the way I've thought about it is this; x=0.999...
x/3= 0.3333...
yet at the same time y=1,
y/3=1/3=0.333333.
it follows that 1/3x=1/3y. then x=y. then 1=0.999..

Infinity is an idea not a number, and using it in equations will lead you to such confusions.

Infinity doesn't exist in real life, you can't divide anything to infinity, So 0.99...9 is 1 cause the difference is smaller than what can be measured. the smallest measurable unit is your margin of error, when your decimal point shrink pass your margin of error, any further accuracy is meaningless.

Also like the explanation of 1/3 being equal to .3333333… and 3 of those being equal to .9999999… but 3/3 being equal to 1

hmm if x=0.9999inf
and 9.999inf - x somehow in my brain doesn't need to be 9, because... I don't know, but every infinity is different
