The action takes place in an alternate version of Tokyo, where humans coexist with ghouls— creatures that look like humans but can only survive by eating human flesh. Ghouls live among the human population in secret, hiding their true nature to avoid persecution by the authorities. The main character is a student named Ken Kaneki, who is hospitalized after an accident and mistakenly receives a ghoul organ transplant. As a result of this transplant, Kaneki becomes only half a ghoul, but he still needs to feed on human flesh like everyone else. Kaneki strives to maintain his humanity by keeping in touch with the human world while immersing himself in the ghoul community.
