An Afghan refugee has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order for the manslaughter of a man who was killed while out walking his dog in west London. Dawood Safi, an Uber driver who arrived in the UK illegally six years ago, was in the grips of psychosis when he fatally stabbed street sweeper Wayne Broadhurst during a “ferocious” knife rampage in October last year. Mr Broadhurst, 49, died on the street with his beloved Spaniel, Harry, at his side. Safi stabbed him 14 times in the head, neck, chest and back. The 28-year-old turned violent after his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, told him he had to leave his rented accommodation within days. The stabbing spree began at the landlord’s home before it spilled out on the street. The 45-year-old was stabbed in the neck, and a 14-year-old boy was also injured. Both managed to escape to the safety of a neighbour as members of the public tried to stop Safi. Mr Broadhurst, the court heard, had the “terrible misfortune” of walking by and for “no apparent reason, rational or otherwise, he was stabbed to death in a frenzied, random and entirely unprovoked attack”. Safi was later Tasered and arrested by police. In July, Safi admitted manslaughter of Mr Broadhurst on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was found guilty of the attempted murder of his landlord. Jurors were unable to reach a decision on whether Safi was guilty of the attempted murder of the teenager. The court heard Safi lied about his age when he arrived in the UK on the back of a lorry in 2020, claiming to be 17, and that he was granted asylum in 2022. In the three days before the stabbings, Safi had attended an appointment at his GP, had a mental health assessment at Hillingdon Hospital, and had sought help at Hayes Police Station.
