🏗️ Excavation Safety – One Wrong Step Can Be Fatal 1. Hazards in Excavation Work Cave-ins / Soil Collapse – The biggest risk; even a small collapse can bury a worker. Falls of Workers & Equipment – Open edges without barricades can cause serious injuries. Falling Loads – Excavator buckets, loose soil, or tools falling into the trench. Hazardous Atmosphere – Oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, methane, or H₂S. Water Accumulation – Rainwater, seepage, or broken pipelines weaken trench walls. Contact with Underground Utilities – Striking electrical cables, gas pipelines, or water lines. Moving Machinery – Heavy equipment working too close can cause vibration and collapse. 2. Planning & Preparation ✅ Conduct risk assessment before starting excavation. ✅ Check underground services with utility drawings and detectors. ✅ Define access, egress, and emergency routes. ✅ Obtain necessary permits to work (PTW). ✅ Assign a competent person responsible for inspections and decisions. 3. Protective Systems (Soil Protection) Sloping / Benching – Cutting back the trench wall at an angle to prevent collapse. Shoring – Installing supports like hydraulic shoring, timber, or trench boxes. Shielding – Using trench boxes to protect workers inside the excavation. Benching – Stepped sides for stable soil (not for all soil types). Rule of Thumb: Any excavation deeper than 1.5 m (5 ft) must be protected. 4. Safe Access & Egress Provide ladders, ramps, or stairs within 7.5 m (25 ft) of workers. Keep access routes free from obstructions and slips hazards. Ensure guardrails or barricades at all entry points. 5. Barricading & Signage Use hard barricades (steel or wood), not only warning tape for deep excavations. Post warning signs: “Danger – Excavation Work, Keep Away.” Provide lighting for night work. 6. Atmospheric Testing Test for: Oxygen (O₂) – Minimum 19.5% Flammable gases – Less than 10% of Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) Toxic gases – Below occupational exposure limits Provide ventilation or SCBA if unsafe. 7. Heavy Equipment Safety Keep heavy machinery at least 1 m away from trench edges. Do not allow vehicles or spoil piles near edges. Use spotters and flagmen for equipment movement. 8. Water Control Install dewatering pumps if groundwater seeps in. Use diversion ditches to prevent surface water entry. Stop work if water compromises trench stability. 9. Inspection Requirements A competent person must inspect: Before each shift. After heavy rain. After vibrations or nearby construction. After any condition that could affect stability. 10. PPE & Emergency Preparedness Mandatory PPE: helmet, hi-vis vest, safety boots, gloves. Respiratory protection if atmosphere is unsafe. Rescue plan must be prepared before entry. No worker should enter an unprotected trench. ⚠️ Remember: Soil weighs more than 1.5 tons per cubic meter – just one cubic meter can crush instantly.
