Mao Zedong, Pol Pot and Franco Freda were three very different political figures, but they are sometimes discussed together because of their radical ideas about society and political revolution. Mao Zedong was the leader of the Chinese Communist Revolution and founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949. He developed Maoism, a form of communism that placed particular importance on peasants and revolutionary mass mobilisation. During his rule, China experienced major campaigns such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. These policies caused enormous social disruption and, particularly during the Great Leap Forward, a catastrophic famine. Pol Pot was the leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. After taking power in 1975, his regime attempted to create an extreme agrarian communist society. Cities were emptied, private property was abolished, and large parts of the population were forced into agricultural labour. The regime carried out mass executions, persecution and forced labour. Between 1975 and 1979, around 1.5 to 2 million people died as a result of executions, starvation, disease and overwork. Franco Freda was an Italian far-right writer and political activist associated with the radical right. In the 1960s and 1970s, he developed ideas that rejected both liberal capitalism and conventional parliamentary politics. Freda became particularly known for his book La disintegrazione del sistema, in which he argued for the destruction of the existing political and social system. He also developed what became known as “National-Maoism”, combining elements of revolutionary nationalism with ideas influenced by Maoism. Although Mao, Pol Pot and Freda belonged to very different political traditions, their ideas show how revolutionary movements could sometimes borrow concepts from political currents normally considered their opponents. However, this does not mean that their ideologies were identical: Mao and Pol Pot were communist revolutionaries, while Freda belonged to the radical Italian right. #political #fyp #thirdposition #mao #socialism
