Well. Not quite. While Obsidian glass is fragile the outer black layer is pretty strong, and if it cooled under water that layer gets thicker

I think they made it durable in game as like a test property because they might have thought of making obsidian tools that deals a ton of damage because obsidian is realy sharp in real life but not very durable
