They asl for explanations only to “debunk” and disregard them, not to understand your perspective.

these kids need to learn grace!!! the generational communication gap is REAL...just because parents don't use the same language...meet us where we are...be open minded with our communication differences...work with us. it does no good to expect parents to use / know your language!! To many this is a problem. what is "socially acceptable " today is not what we knew. This definitely does show curiosit if it is coming from a parent from different generation!!!! Communication and grace is key. These misunderstandings are creating unnecessary harm.

it's hard when as a parent your instructed mo to react to problem behaviour of teenager and be calm on the outside but reality is you want to drag her into next week because the police bringing her home at 2am is draining stressful and I'm still awake at 4:20am.

But what if your are asking so that you can try and understand the why? How else do you know so you can re evaluate your actions and try to look at their perspective?

In the past I thought the best thing to do was override and hide emotions from my kids. And then I’d feel terrible if I failed and they bubbled over. Now I just tell them the emotion that is coming up, set boundaries, and revisit the issue once there has been time to process. Unfortunately my oldest daughter did not get to experience that as much as my youngest has.

Out of curiosity, how do parents reach out to you who actually want to do better/work on themselves to fix the relationship?

its similar to leading with things like... no offense but... please dont take this the wrong way but... they think if they apologize first or come from a place of niceness they can say anything they want...

…when my nervous system is triggered, it’s my unhealthy coping mechanisms and strategies that kick in to protect my feelings of abandonment, which have zero to do with my kids behavior.

This hits home for me. I have so much guilt and shame for what I allowed to happen. My husband was a narcissist and I was codependent enabling wife that didn’t protect the kids from him. I don’t know what to say to my kids. I have let them know that it wasn’t OK, but I don’t know what else to say.

It’s giving “justify your feelings” vibes. I don’t need to justify why I feel something. And it’s not my job to walk my estranged parent through why what they do is harmful.

the cut off sentance is actually a perfect example of the problem. it doesnt matter WHAT youre actually feeling. They wonder why you feel anything outside of what THEY wanted.

We were forced to control our feelings… for better or worse. We had to chose to get over things and get on with life. We weren’t allowed the luxury of being traumatized. So giving in to negative emotions and making yourself a pain in the neck because you’re in your feelings is a response you choose.

JESUS CHRIST! How do you know it’s hostile ? They may have a real interest & curiosity which you are misinterpreting. Majority of Parents are trying their best how about EC having some compassion towards their parents? Relationships are a 2 way street - how about adult EC also looking at themselves & what energy are they bringing to their relationships?

So what is the right way to ask questions about where your adult child is coming from? I watch your content because I want to learn a better way, but it feels like you slap the hand of estranged parents every time.
