I came across a beautiful article a few years ago talking about this! in some of the native tribes, they honored those that were indifferent to their gender norms. They called them 2 spirited souls and acknowledged that our purpose is to bring balance between the masculine and feminine energy. The white man and patriarchy are the ones who have assigned these "gender roles". we're out of touch with ourselves and especially with the others. There is a huge imbalance and resentment towards the other gender that shouldn't exist.
