@user3072401209606: Redd Foxx | From Malcolm X’s “funniest dishwasher” to TV legend Redd Foxx was a legendary comedian and actor. He was born John Elroy Sanford and nicknamed "Red" for his ruddy complexion. Once he ventured into show business, he took the surname Foxx from Major League Baseball player, Jimmie Foxx. Leaving St. Louis for Chicago, Redd played the washboard in a band at age 13, but jumped on a train to NYC when the band broke up. There, he met Malcom Little, who the world would eventually know as Malcolm X. In "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," Malcolm referred to Redd as “Chicago Red, the funniest dishwasher on this earth.” Redd began performing on the Chitlin Circuit as a comedian. While performing in LA, he was offered a contract with Dooto Records and went on to record over 50 comedy albums. In 1972, after making his film debut in Cotton Comes to Harlem, Redd was offered the role of junkman Fred Sanford in a new NBC sitcom, Sanford and Son. It made him a star. Redd was important to me as a kid. During a rather turbulent childhood, my great-grandparents' house became one of the only places I felt protected from the world. My great-grandfather Bruce loved watching Sanford and Son, and soon, it became something we did together. I didn't really understand much of what I was watching, but I had a wonderful bond with Bruce, and seeing him laugh at Fred Sanford's antics made me happy. As I got a bit older, we'd often plan our days around the show. In Fred, I believe Bruce found a kindred spirit. Fred never threw anything away, and neither did Bruce. The most important thing Bruce didn't throw away was me. He saved my childhood, and he saved my life. In 1989, Redd and long-time friend Della Reese co-starred in Eddie Murphy’s Harlem Nights. Though the movie itself received little attention, critics took notice of the pair’s performance. CBS jumped and signed the two for a new sitcom, The Royal Family. While on the set of The Royal Family, Redd suffered a massive heart attack. Unfortunately, many others on the set thought he was joking, since his Fred Sanford character was known for exaggerating a heart attack. Redd passed away on October 11, 1991. He was 68 years old. Eddie Murphy paid for Redd's funeral and burial. #grave #cemetery #mausoleum #graves #cemeteries
