I always emphasis that the book wasn’t for me. I point out things I did like, but I struggled to get into it because of xyz

I am not here to babysit authors' egos. If I don't like it I will leave a negative review. I only want to spare people wasting their hard earned money on it. Negative review is not mean unless you start calling author names. Maybe next time they will put more effort into editing.

When I send out my arcs to readers I have a note that says if you choose to DNF that’s okay, please just let me know. So maybe you could go back to the author and say that you’re going to DNF? Don’t put yourself in a slump 🤍

Use the sandwitch method. Start with acknowledging something positive, deliver a constructive criticism, and then end with a praise.

I would ask the author. Tell them you don't like it and it would be a dnf for you. They might not want the review at the end.

I had an arc that was similar. I would reach out to the author or the team that sent you the book and let them know your review before making it public.

Don’t continue to read it. This happened to me. It took me a month. All through August. And I STILL didn’t finish it. 100pages left and I gave up. I’ve been in a slump since. DNF that.

i would leave a review for the author only, don’t post in on amazon/goodreads etc! give them a chance to improve before they actually launch the book 😊

Just tell the truth. The truth isn't mean, it's just the truth. And it's okay to DNF an ARC, as long as you are least try to put it into words why, so the writer can benefit from the feedback.

Friendly reminder that reviews are for readers! Please please please do NOT message the author directly with criticism, constructive or not, unless the author has specifically asked for it. Every opinion is valid and reviewers have every right to talk about books they didn’t like, but authors also have the right to protect their mental health and read reviews when they’re in the right headspace to hear criticism. Dropping it unsolicited directly to them is 100% a way to make someone feel absolutely terrible, especially if they’re a newer author

honestly if a book ONLY has 100% positive reviews i assume the author has only had their friends review it or have somehow deleted negative reviews and it puts me off 🤷‍♀️having at least a few bad reviews adds credibility in my opinion

I lean more into “if you enjoyed (insert book title) and (author) then you may enjoy this. Think of what sort of reader might like it.

I disagree w most people here, I think you can safely dnf and explain what didn't work for you in your review. No need to torture yourself and given they have pos reviews it won't tank the book. But it can save other ppl who have similar taste from wasting their time and even help the publisher w the marketing of the book to make sure it finds the right audience.

I politely message the author saying it's not for me and leave it as that

I personally write ARC reviews the same way I’d write any other review, just being polite and entirely honest. If you’re really hating it, you could also DNF and say “DNF’d at X%” and then give your review of your thoughts so far and your reasons for DNFing it. Reading is meant to be fun at the end of the day, and you’re under no obligation to finish the book even if it is an ARC!

part of being a reviewer is writing negative reviews. yeah it sucks sometimes, but writing a negative review objectively and without being unnecessarily rude will make you a better reviewer!

I just didn’t leave a review when I had this problem. I felt bad but I couldn’t have scored it more than 1 star and the author was replying to everyone on Goodreads and I just felt mean 😂😭

you don't have to publish anything about it. Give the fellow writer an honest review in person, and tell him I went up to this point in your book, and it's dragging there a lot, I can't finish it. sorry . If someone would have said that to me, I would have really appreciated it. Just be honest

Be constructive. New writers don’t know what they don’t know until someone tells them. I think true writers want to know. Releasing a bad book for me would be the worst possible situation.

the best way to go is to be honest but kind in my opinion. I'm so bad with posting critique too but the point of arcs is to be honest 😅 I wouldn't phrase it in a "the writing is objectively bad" way, but you can say the writing didn't work for you with an example perhaps. also, you are allowed to DNF arcs! instead of giving a star rating you can just explain why you DNFed and where?
