I complimented a lady on her hair at the store, she said thank you, walked away, then ran back to give me a painted rock from her purse. I think about that a lot

The clerk at my liquor store asked me to adopt his friend’s baby. I did not but if he can do that you can ask for something smaller than that.

The most connected I’ve felt to my community lately was when I watched a fight at dollar tree and explained what happened to another customer who walked up halfway through 😂

Being awkward at people sometimes is a great way to build up resilience to being awkward. You start to realize that almost no one remembers you were awkward and even fewer people care

Go to a place regularly. Any place. Library, bar, coffee shop, dog park, German class, museum, soup kitchen volunteering. You will acquire people.

I was singing to a song in the grocery store quietly (living on a prayer) and a dude heard me and joined in and then we sang together :P

Solid advice - might I add: have your coffee or tea on your front stoop or porch etc. I’ve met most of the people in my hood just doing that. If you have kids who are lemonade stand age that works like a charm too.

thank you SO much for this cuz as an autistic person saying “just talk to people” is Not At All Helpful but it’s basically all people say when the topic of community building comes up.

It’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable and to be annoying. It’s morally neutral and completely unavoidable. Learning how to tolerate it is important

my grocery store is being remodeled. every few days I bond with someone new over the struggle of finding where the flour or jelly has been moved to. half the time we laugh about it, it's nice.

microsocializations are actually a huge driver of social cohesion and individual wellbeing! also I've started lasting friendships through this kind of interaction!

*always* be nice to service workers. look them in the eye, ask their name, be patient. they have to deal with the most annoying, racist, rude people you can imagine everyday. just being pleasant and seeing them as a person not a robot makes a difference

People underestimate how important small talk with strangers is. You can’t expect to have instant community or automatic friends with everyone but it is actually necessary to be kind and welcoming and pleasant to the people you see day to day.

AND if you are masking, keep doing this while masking. People are very put off my masking, but when you have a convo with them, even if it’s silly, they drop their guard more and are generally nicer to you. (Also agoraphobic here)

A fellow shopper approached me in the bakery aisle in some level of confusion and asked me if I knew whether the difference between baking soda and baking powder was important. And I was so excited to tell him that yes it was! And he thanked me and moved along and that was it, but it was so nice to help somebody that I still remember it like 3 years later. Anyway hope this helps me eyes see this, thanks Beeves ❤
