@lukesgoldies: The areas with the farms, that raise the actual Koi Fish and Goldfish, have great knowledge and great systems, I just wished they would communicate that knowledge better with the areas that that displayed them more often. It was definitely a pattern I noticed while in Japan to keep display tanks very small. #fish #goldfish #aquarium #ranchu

It’s very surprising to me that a society that has such deep roots in Shintoism - with a big emphasis on well being, harmony with nature, spiritual connection with animals - still keep animals in this way. Kittens, puppies, rabbits etc in pet stores too are not kept in suitable environments. Almost treated as a fashion accessory or a piece of furniture. Animal welfare in the west is by no means perfect, still lots to be done, but Japan do seem to lag behind.

its the same as in the states, you have places and people that properly care for fish and you have people that put baby red tail catfish in 10gal tanks because theyre sold at petsmart and the "fish pro" there said they grow to the aize of their tank.
