@hankgreen1: I’m sorry to the knitting folks! I felt confused on how to respond because I don’t want to bulldoze a team of good people dealing with complex stuff that I am not in charge of. I hope this makes sense. I try to tread lightly and that can be tricky when there are multiple groups I’m trying to care for at once.
I think addressing the implicit misogyny in the video is a better way to apologize to the community than knitting a sock.

what i really need is for you to knit a scarf and a pair of socks and then decide which one should be worth more in Focus Friend

I would highly recommend reading "The Fabric of Civilization" by Virginia Postrel for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of fiber arts and technology

Would you talk about woodworking the way you talked about knitting? Both have math at their core, both are artistic and both are approachable as a novice and refined with practice. Only difference is the gender.

maybe do a deep dive on how the scientific community undermines soooo many fiber arts and other crafts. No one literally expects you to knit a sock, but since you are part of the science community, I think understanding the misogyny in that community would be more beneficial to you.

you will actually have to address the misogyny, elitism and classism before this goes anywere. You will have to prove yourself again, and show us that your content can be trusted and is ALWAYS truthfull

A big part of the problem is that the SciShow video misrepresented the research it was based on. The physics weren’t explaining knitting, the knitting was used to model the physics.

You started a sock based charity, Hank. You should definitely make a pair of socks, not only to understand knitting better, but also to talk about your sock charity!

i do genuinely think you should try to learn to knit a pair of socks. but I think you SHOULD use a pattern and potentially even have an expert knitter there to guide and teach you. I think that will showcase the skill and technology better than trying to do it without

I understand that you don't want to take control from your team. However, you are still the face of that video. The team should understand the blowback is on them too and, at a minimum, need to make a video about the history and value of fiber craft.

As a polymer researcher and knitter, I recommend looking at Feynman’s “What is Science” where he described how watching women knit showed him that women can in fact do math. People shouldn’t be mean, but the tie between women in STEM and knitting has always been overlooked

fiber artists have been driven to insanity by the incredibly complicated hobbies that have been labeled "lame" "boring" and "for old ladies to pass time" and I'm kindof sorry you had to find out this way 😂

Hey, remember those old Vlog Brothers “punishments” for not uploading on time? Trying to knit would be a great one! And a wonderful way to respond to all this. Big fan! Thanks for this video. 🌷
