You don't necessarily have to clean your AC unit yourself. but you should have it at least serviced once a year. AC tech Will come out and clean the coils and check the freon.

you don't have to take the outside cover off to clean it I have taken an HVAC class and I do this for a living you can if you don't have a hose attachment use your thumb and spray it you can go from the inside and then work your way to the outside and you want to work your way from top to bottom
