NWA PASTOR: The Pastor’s Son Who Became Owerri’s Most Feared “Butcher” Between 2014 and 2016, a dark shadow seemed to settle over Owerri. Students became cautious after nightfall. Young men whispered about shootings, ambushes, and sudden disappearances. And at the centre of many of those stories was a young man known on the streets as Nwa Pastor. His real name was Obinna Chigozie. The nickname was almost painfully ironic. Obinna had been raised in a deeply religious home. His father was a respected pastor, while his mother was known for her devotion and strong belief in discipline, peace, and morality. But somewhere along the line, Obinna began walking in the opposite direction. He became rebellious. He skipped classes, picked fights, stole, and gradually drifted deeper into street crime. Then, in 2016, everything changed. Obinna and a group of associates reportedly joined the Black Axe Confraternity. And within a remarkably short period, he developed a reputation for extreme violence, earning the feared street title “Butcher”—an enforcer allegedly trusted with some of the group’s most dangerous operations. He was rarely alone. His crew reportedly included Sky, Black Fela, Apostle, Aliah, and Soky, several of whom were students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Together, they became associated with a wave of violence that stretched beyond Owerri and, according to accounts, into other parts of the region. Around Imo State University, especially the student-heavy Bishop's Court area, their presence allegedly became a source of fear. Students returning from night classes were reportedly ambushed and robbed. But the crew's activities would soon become even more violent. On Douglas Road, they allegedly attacked a commercial motorcyclist and took his motorcycle, intending to use it during hit-and-run attacks against members of rival groups. Then came the explosion. By the middle of 2016, tensions between Black Axe and Supreme Vikings had reportedly escalated into an open and deadly confrontation. One of the alleged victims was Zaki, a quiet music vendor in the Ikenegbu area who was accused of secretly belonging to the Vikings. According to accounts, Nwa Pastor and his associates tracked him down and killed him at his shop. Not long afterward, another young man known as Chibyke reportedly suffered the same fate. But the incident that would send shockwaves through the area happened at IMSU Junction, close to the popular Orange Groove hangout. There, Nwa Pastor and his associates allegedly cornered Chikabala, a feared ex-graduate leader of the Vikings, inside his electronics repair shop. What happened next was brutal. Chikabala was attacked and killed, and the incident reportedly triggered chaos in the surrounding area. But the most chilling part of the story was how quickly the crew's reign came to an end. They had risen together. And within months, they were falling one after another. By December 2016, Nwa Pastor was reportedly tracked to Visions Hotel near Basic Bus Stop in Nekede, where police arrested him. What happened afterward, however, remains disputed. Some accounts claim that Obinna died in police custody shortly after his arrest. Other accounts tell a completely different story—that he was eventually released and later travelled to Germany. His associates met different fates. Black Fela and Apostle were reportedly intercepted by SARS operatives around the Control area, near Assumpta Cathedral, and killed. Sky was arrested and sent to prison, where accounts say he remains. And Aliah survived. In the end, the feared crew that had emerged so violently in 2016 barely lasted a year. It was a story of a sudden rise, a terrifying burst of violence, and an equally sudden collapse. And perhaps the strangest irony of all was the name by which their most notorious member was remembered: Nwa Pastor — the son of a pastor who becam known as the Butcher.
