It is not just about singing, it is about learning, enjoying, and creating memories together. I still remember the waiata I learned back in primary school over 30 years ago, and that shows how powerful music can be for learning te reo. Even though we are not Māori, embracing waiata feels like the most natural way to honour the language of Aotearoa. It reminds us all that te reo is not just for the classroom or the stage, it is alive in our lounge, our car, and our voices. For us, waiata is more than music. Singing together makes the words stick, the meanings come alive, and it gives us moments of joy we will always treasure as a family. It also shows you both that learning te reo is normal, beautiful, and something to be proud of. Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is the perfect time to join in. Swap your usual playlist for Waiata Anthems, sing together in the car, or try a waiata before bed. However you do it, you are helping keep te reo a forever language, ake ake ake. We might not get every word right, but that is not the point. It is about showing that te reo belongs in our lives, no matter who we are.
