@thechrishinton: We don’t listen to connect, we listen to defend. That’s why your kids shut down, your partner checks out, and no one feels safe around you. This isn’t about blame, it’s about waking up. It’s time to stop listening with your triggers, and start listening with your ears. Drop a comment if this called you out, or woke something up. thechrishinton.com for the real book, and one on one coaching. #emotionalintelligence #innerhealing #personalgrowth #observermindset #communicationmatters

Listening with triggers for me causes me to be defensive. I also have a face that speaks before my mouth does... Not sure how to fix that one lol

My father is 61 years old. He had a very rough upbringing and I’ve justified his behavior for 20 years. I had to learn to be loud in order to be heard. After many years of therapy I finally understood that I wasn’t going to be heard by him. He listens with his triggers. Only listens to defend himself.

Triggers such as reloading and interrupting friends and family…I’ve been guilty and still trying to catch myself and actively listen 🤭

I've been so focused on the fact that people don't listen to me that I forgot I also need to listen to them.

People that listen with their triggers pin point out words from a single sentence and respond immediately to what they “think they heard, not what was actually said. Listen to respond, not understand.

Unfortunately for me, my husband wouldn’t speak to me. He would just look at me with a blank stare. I would express as best I could and at the end he would said I don’t do anything wrong. You do this and that. He would get off topic which had nothing to do with what I was trying to say. It was an uphill battle that got nowhere. I tried for 18 years and have recently filed for divorce. Even after all, he said to me I was divorcing him because I lost weight. I was speechless. Literally. I know I am not perfect but for 18 years he didn’t hear one word. Is this normal?
