The issue is 90% of teams playing Chelsea play back 5s and Cole is stuck playing 1v2. It’s why he can only play on the right vs teams like PSG, Bayern, etc.

The issue is that this doesn't work as well with teams with a low block. Palmer needs to be the primary free playmaker in games where the opponents sit back

Over the last couple years I have been the biggest Cole Palmer denier but I will say after watching him against Bayern today I’m a lot more convinced/impressed by him as a roaming RW than him as a 10

i’m gonna say what Maresca said in his press conference when asked about this last season. He said, if you have a fullback overlapping with Palmer in the right, he still ends up in the right half space regardless. so to him, playing him in the ten is the same thing, because regardless of whether he’s in the ten or has a fullback behind him, he’s still gonnna end up in the right half space

When estevao came on he went into the 10 and Palmer stayed on the right so potentially Maresca might use him as a rw in future. Would love to also see James do that Gusto role and combine with Palmer instead of this midfield gimmick
