This must be a nexus event for every white person. In middle school I had a classmate and when I found out she was Korean, I asked "North or South?" In my mind, I was proud just to demonstrate I knew there were two Koreas. Of course I had no idea about any of the history or differences. I still remember the surprised annoyance on her face when she told me "If I was North Korean I wouldn't be here!" which meant nothing to me at the time, but was 💯 true.

I've started telling the "my _ family member was in the Korean war" with "oh hey cool they killed my grandpa!" it ties nicely with my north or south answer being "well I left so which do you think?"
