About one year ago, we started hearing about something called "bikepacking". We've camped, biked, and backpacked before, but we didnt know you could do all three at once! As people who are always eager for adventure and to experience the world in new ways and from new perspectives, we knew we needed to try it. Fast forward to this past weekend, our first bikepacking trip in Idaho was a huge success and we're already plotting round 2! From the desert to the mountain top, we biked 100 miles over the course of 3 days with temps of over 100 degrees ☀️ We fixed up our bikes to adjust to the bumpy gravel conditions, packed up our camping gear, and gathered up a group of friends who were willing to happily suffer the consequences alongside us. We traveled through a stunning diversity of gradually changing landscapes as we followed the river the whole way up its source. We finally arrived at the tiny historic town of Atlanta, ID with a whopping population of 32. Since temperatures reached over 100 degrees, we made sure to bring extra water filters, protect ourselves from sun exposure with hats and sun shirts, and take lots of breaks to rest, rehydrate, and cool off. During breaks, we swam, fished, gold panned, snacked, filtered more water, and readjusted our gear as needed. We quickly noticed that chunky tires, padded bike shorts, a little bit of suspension, and spring seating were noticeably helpful against the bumpy washboard dirt and gravel road. If we were normal, we would have packed only lightweight gear and left the luxuries behind. Since we're not, we hauled a gold pan, fishing equipment, and a small cast iron pan in the event we were able to catch and cook up some trout. LUCKILY, the weight on both of our bikes was positioned over our back wheels and mostly centered which helped with our stability. Since we camped at the same site on Days 1 & 2, we were able to leave behind some weight as we climbed our way up the peak to Atlanta on Day 2, bringing mainly snacks, water, and emergency supplies. Even though our legs, backs, and butts were sore, we all sped up as fast as we could when we finally saw the "1 Mile to Atlanta" mileage sign. We were all so excited to make it to the top, and it made things even better when we discovered the only bar in town was open. Our celebratory drink was a huge boost for morale before reality set in - we still had 50+ miles to go to get back to our starting point where our cars were parked. There's no Ubers in Atlanta!
