I’ve been doing nails for a while now, and even though my progress has been slower, I’ve learned so many things I wish someone would’ve told me earlier! 1. It’s ok to say NO! As a people pleaser, I struggle with this one, but we can’t take everyone in—especially if we have other things to do. Always put yourself first. 2. Take breaks. I know sometimes we just want to get everything done at once, but it’s so important to eat, stretch, and drink water. 3. Exercise. We sit for 8 hours straight, barely moving, and if you want to avoid back or neck pain, working out is the best thing you can do. Health always comes first! 4. Not every client will be the perfect fit—and that’s ok. Everyone has different personalities and styles. Your work might not match what they’re looking for, and that’s fine. There will always be people who love and support your style. 5. Family won’t always be your main support. But you have to trust yourself, and if this is what you really want, focus on improving little by little each day. You don’t need anyone’s approval to do what you love. 6. Don’t be shy—make small talk! Simple questions like “How are you? Do you get your nails done often? Are these for a special occasion?” go a long way. But it’s also ok to keep the appointment quiet if the client seems like they’d prefer that. 7. Check in often. Throughout the appointment, make sure to ask, “Do you like it? Is the shape/length/color ok?” 8. Being your own boss comes with responsibilities. One of the biggest ones is filing taxes and keeping track of income. Please stay on top of all your earnings and expenses—it’ll save you stress later.
