Choosing between a raised bed or ground level bed for growing veggies? Here are a few things to consider to help you make your decision! Cost: 🌱 Raised beds cost more to make because they require more materials and the volume of soil & compost you need to buy to fill them is greater. Practicalities: 🌱 Due to being raised up off the ground, raised beds clearly mark out boundaries for you children & pets and can be more accessible for those who are less mobile. 🌱 Raised beds are a fantastic option to give you a larger growing space if you’re gardening in concreted area or up on a terrace or balcony. 🌱 If you have truly terrible soil (eg full of rubble) raised beds give you more room to improve the soil. 🌱 Raised beds heat up more quickly when spring arrives, slightly extending the growing season. 🌱 In narrow gardens with high fences which cast shade, every inch you raise your planting area can make a difference to the amount of light that area receives. The higher a patch is off the ground, the longer the sunlight will be able to reach it. 🌱 If your garden gets seriously soggy, or even a bit flooded, raised beds are great for drainage and keep plant roots from sitting in water. 🌱 The nooks and crannies of raised beds can be good hiding places for slugs and snails (although we haven’t had much of a problem with this - I still firmly believe nurturing a balanced ecosystem in the garden limits gastropod numbers to a manageable level!) 🌱 Raised beds could dry out more quickly than ground level beds, but this can be managed with healthy soil high in organic matter. 🌱 Raised beds do require some maintenance, and if built out of wood will eventually need replacing. Hard woods such as oak should last for 25 years or more. Aesthetics: 🌱 It’s important that you like the look of your vegetable garden, so take this into account too! It’s a matter of personal taste 😊 In summary, raised beds have their pros and cons, but they are more expensive. Ultimately, both growing methods work really well, it’s just about deciding what will best suit you & your garden 🌱 #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden
