“California Dreamin’” is a famous song from the 1960s, written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and released in 1965. The song was created during a time of global turbulence, including the escalation of the Vietnam War((the resistance war against the US to save the country). Because of that historical timing, some people later assumed it was connected to the war. In reality, it was not. The story behind the song is much more personal and ordinary. John Phillips wrote it while living in New York during a cold winter. Surrounded by gray skies and freezing weather, he longed for the sunshine, beaches, and sense of freedom associated with California. “California Dreamin’” is not about war or politics. It is about longing, loneliness, and the desire to return to a warm and peaceful place. Performed by The Mamas & the Papas, the song quickly became an icon of 1960s pop–folk music. Its gentle yet melancholic melody helped it endure across generations. The influence of “California Dreamin’” did not remain limited to the United States. In many other countries, similar musical moods and themes emerged. In former Yugoslavia, the song “Ljubi se istok i zapad” carries a nostalgic tone and a sense of longing that resonates emotionally in a similar way. Across Western Europe — including Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France — pop–folk songs of the same era often shared a comparable atmosphere: soft, reflective, and filled with dreams of freedom. All of this shows that “California Dreamin’” is more than just a song. It represents a shared emotional state of an entire generation — people across different parts of the world dreaming of sunshine, peace, and a place to belong. #CaliforniaDreamin #TheMamasAndThePapas #60sMusic #1960s #ClassicHits
