@metmuseum: Armor with a surprise! ⚔️ This exceptionally crafted Japanese armor or gusoku was created not for the battlefield but to signal wealth. It is an outstanding example of late Edo period (19th century) armor that revives traditional styles from before the sixteenth century. During the Edo period, a time of relative peace and stability, the practical use of armor decreased. High-ranking warriors who could afford a new suit focused on its decorative aspect. Although several examples exist where parts of an armor include compartments, the use of a medicine container with a spoon and an inkstone with a brush is unique and not seen on any other known suit. — 🪶 “Helmet bowl” by Neo Masanobu 根尾正信 (Japanese, active early 18th century), “Armor (Gusoku) with Box,” 19th century; helmet bowl, early 18th century. Iron, leather, lacquer, textile, silver, gold, brass, copper-gold alloy (shakudō), copper-silver alloy (shibuichi), feather, wood, glass, boar bristle. Gift of Rosemary and Leighton R. Longhi, in honor of John Carpenter, 2023 (2023.735.5a–y). On view in Gallery 377.

Are the medicine boxes for fast healing during combat?

Wish it was anywhere but NY, so much cool stuff there and after visiting once I truly despise that city, just wish all the museums would just move to a diff state

If I'm correct, this armor was donated to a Temple in Japan by the maker(?), then sold to a Japanese antique specialist in Kyoto, who then sold it to a gentleman who became a curator at the MET, who then donated it permanently to the MET. 🤔

You say it has “some age, some damage,” but you could have fooled me. The woven fibers/textile parts look like they were made within the last decade or two. How on earth was this preserved so well? What is the back story? I’m speechless.

Doing things like this is my dream job. I have a degree in Liberal Studies and a masters in Public Administration. Chat what can I do with what I already have to get into this field?

I’m not suggesting that this go to auction, but I’m curious of the value in monetary terms and then I’m curious if the value of it would be higher if it had been worn in battle

While living in Japan, I visited the Himeji Castle in Osaka that had a rich Samurai history. I remember having chills walking through & observing the Samurai armor on display. So interesting because I have Samurai ancestry on my mother’s side of the family ⛩

I was at the Philbrook museum in Tulsa a few months back and got to see some of the coolest samurai armor, weapons, even horse armor. One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in my life hands down.

I've always wondered what samurai armor would look like if it was designed for a wheelchair or crutch user. As well as different armors from other countries. I think it would be cool to have a manga or western style comic where disabled characters had more value and were seen as historically valuable members of society. I feel like society is dominated with the trope that disabled people are inherently useless/burdens to the community. I have so many ideas, but I'm not very good at illustration. I'm good at writing scripts though. I don't even know what I would do with something that I finished writing. Most publishers don't accept independent work without representation.
