@thebrolesstraveled: The Kulamba festival is an annual traditional ceremony of the Chewa people of Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. It is held at Mkaika, near Katete in Zambia’s Eastern Province, to honor the Chewa paramount chief, Kalonga Gawa Undi. The festival gathers Chewa chiefs and communities from across the three countries to pay homage and reaffirm their unity and shared heritage. During the ceremony, chiefs present tribute to Gawa Undi—traditionally in the form of gifts such as agricultural produce, livestock, and symbolic items—while reporting on the welfare of their people. This act strengthens social cohesion and maintains the cultural authority of the Chewa chieftaincy. Speeches, songs, and prayers emphasize the bonds of kinship, respect for elders, and the importance of Chewa customs. The day is marked by vibrant performances: Nyau dancers wearing elaborate masks and costumes perform energetic, drum-driven dances, portraying ancestral spirits and moral lessons. Women in brightly patterned chitenge cloth sing and ululate, while traditional drumming fills the air. More than a cultural spectacle, the Kulamba festival is a living expression of Chewa identity and cross-border unity.
