this finally made it click in my head why the 'but cr have had poc guests and mini campaigns so actually they do have representation' never sat right with me, bc your point about letting black people originate characters and have actual influence on the story isn't really possible when they are only guests that need to help move the story in a specific way for the main narrative to function, or given small arcs that have a set end point bc the main campaign has to start/revolve around it. so yeah they're at the table, but not in meaningful enough way to actually be real representation. thanks for helping me put this in perspective, as always love your takes✨

I always like the quote from psych when Gus whats to be part of a play and the director tries to argue that the cast should be all white because it was set in England in 1888 but Gus responds with "So what are you saying? Black people hadn't been invented yet?"

Have you been in an actual play and if not would you consider it? Would love to see you at a table.

Lou Wilson exists! Aabria exists! and they have done absolutely amazing things in tabletop. Not to mention theyve brought critical role the BEST THING they've done in Calamity. You dont get that without poc. You dont reveal how good something can be until you paint in all 3 dimensions.

Not to mention some of the heaviest hitters in the table top gaming world are POC… what a massive loss to any group to miss out on them.

How is it, in a game that has a diverse option of characters one could play, someone wouldn't want to experience more diverse voices at the table. And in a let's play!? That opens up more stories. That is more content. Like in a selfish way, how can they not see value in having people who havent dominated these spaces for years bring you new stories and characters.

I’m producing/ facilitating my first AP right now. 2/3s of my cast is BIPOC. We are all trans, raising money for a trans charity in our province. That’s not tokenizing. It’s celebrating all of the awesome, diverse talent in the community so we can tell an awesome story together. That’s it. It’s not hard to cast with diversity in mind if you want to put in the time to look.

I feel like growing up on white western culture I couldn't grasp that diversity isn't just a 'look' but actually that people have vastly different life experiences to white people like me. I feel like on paper its easy to say "Oh well we're all different!!" and yet have no way of grasping just how monumental those life experiences are

i found out about critical role really late, i had watched dimension 20 for a year and peaked at the cast of critical role and was like, nah im good. I like to feel like i would be welcome or appreciated in roleplay content, and I really hate being the only person of color in a space fr

They say that it favors under qualified candidates which in the context free conception of dei may have some logic, HOWEVER, in practice it provides a much needed balance to systemic/ implicit biases that are often overlooked and can be consciously or unconsciously committed

Would tokenization be when they remake a movie but replace certain characters?

Heavy on the statement you made about people being uncomfortable and just wanting POC to be quiet. It ruins their experience, it ruins their “escapism” to have someone point out these things. Spent the better part of these past 2020s talking about CR and decided I was done this year because the community is so insidiously vile towards POC, a lot more than they realize.

Aabriya Iyengar, Lou Wilson, Zac Oyama, Erika Ishii, Rashawn Nadine Scott, Alex Song Xia, Jasmine Bulhar, Oscar Montoya, Persephone Valentine just off the top of my head. EVERY D20 season. And it matters because we would never have known these storytellers if only white ppl were invited. Im mixed and seeing Zac Oyama play D&D means so much to me. Seeing Aabriya run arguably the best games in the scene ...yeah representation matters.

I think you really hit it on the head with your point about them just saying this so they don't have to think about people of color in their media because it kind of comes down to that. Most white people who aren't vehemently, outright racist (and I fall to this too) don't see an all white cast as leaving poc out of the stories and representation, and when there is someone who is of color, we often don't see them as of color, just as another person. We don't think about the history of poc not being allowed in those spaces and the fight that these people had to go through in order to get a spot that is sometimes just handed to the average white person who happens to be interested in whatever project (ofc this is not saying anything about the skill or anything that white CR players have, just about that typically is not a factor in them getting chosen for these roles). People of color always have to bring something additional to the table in order to gain access to the space, and they always have to prove their worth.... which is why people see initiatives or the thought that goes into the inclusion of people of color as tokenism or the woke agenda or filling a quota
