I think that the sister has a mental health issue that the parents & husband know about & have known about for a long time are trying to cover it up. But, pushing one child away to keep the other happy isn't right.

This change in behaviour could actually be medical. Sudden changes / erratic behaviour can actually indicate underlying undiagnosed medical issues.

The sister is embarrassed for allowing her jealousy to show and also for blaming her own son. If she backs down from the lie she’d be admitting that she has a jealousy issue.
