On February 15, 2015, ISIS released a video of their execution by beheading on a beach near Sirte, killing them for their Christian faith. The men, many of whom were heard calling on Jesus, became a symbol of steadfast faith under persecution. The Coptic Orthodox Church canonized them as martyrs the same day, and Pope Francis later included them in the Catholic Church’s martyrology, honoring them as saints recognized across Christian traditions.
