You actually spend way more on laundry products this way as well as causing significant damage to your washing machine and clothing. Also you never want to mix laundry products together as you will not be getting the proper measurements needed of your laundry products in your laundry loads. All you need to wash your laundry is 2 tablespoons (1 oz) of liquid or powdered detergent. Liquid detergent does clean better compared to powdered, but both will do the job. Just purchase the detergent that is within your budget and only use 2 tablespoons per properly loaded laundry load. The laundry detergent I purchased is approximately $15 and I can do 200 loads with it. You can also safely add 2 tablespoons of OxiClean and/or 2 tablespoons of scent beads.
