How about the shops/dealers cover the techs pay for things they offer to customers. Free mpi? Free this and that? Fine and dandy but it’s taking money from your mouth to save the customers and your bosses bonuses.

Nah. I’ve done that for 3 years and all it did was lose me hours. I’ve since gone bitter, and demand time for anything bs. Guess what, my hours nearly doubled. No more free work.

ive seen some advisors completely ruin the good out of good techs, its awful to see. in a good place to work they make it easy to work with customers and help people out. however, grumpy people are very much out there.

No pay, no work. I don’t come in to not make a living. Don’t like the mentality? Start paying people a salary. The ONLY work we get paid for is diag, and swapping parts.

If I don’t get paid I don’t do it. The customer can pay whatever, but the guy stoking my paycheck better pay me the full amount of what I’m doing.

Fact- techs are paid in a petty way “nickel and dime”, .1 …….. so asking to be paid for petty repairs and diag is more than fair, valid, and reasonable. If it’s “easy” than why don’t they have the customer or advisor or some hourly guy performing these “easy” repairs / diag? The customer satisfaction excuse is overplayed and only benefits advisors and management due to their csi score bonus pay structure. Doing it at the expense of others is theft or slavery.

Too many times will the dealer goodwill a repair out of warranty for PR in the future and the tech gets to do the job for less than half

you had me until talking about advisors. the advisor doesn’t care and will still get paid, but you think the tech should just be okay with doing work for free? but service advisors aren’t expected to do that? weird

is the dealership in a position to help people service their cars? it sure is, by paying the technician to fix it and not charging the customer. not by relying on free labor from someone that doesn't have a piece of the profit share

they wouldn't be so petty if they actually got paid to work. its human instinct to treat these situations like this and very fair due to the labor laws being very unfair. flat rate has killed the automotive service industry.

tech ability is the only thing the service dept has too sell so until the managers finally accept that screwing the techs is costing them more money in the long run with bounced warranty claims, rework and destroyed reputation abd it's just easier to make taking care of the techs properly the priority they'll take care of the customers. screw the techs and your customers are definitely gonna get screwed. life is karma right. u said it yourself u get back what u put out. time for the managers to start doing it right

You are basically taking money off your table to put it on someone elses. The customer makes money at their job, The customer pays dealership, dealership pays you. If you can’t afford to have the car fixed/serviced, You are out of your price range.

does any other service do anything for free..... when you go to the doctor , or out to eat, or any type of home repair no. The dealership wants to be a charity with your time ok pay me then eat it and not charge the customer. Your time has value.

I can guarantee you if you do something for free you are screwing yourself the advisor and boss are still charging for that hr diag you didn’t get paid for. I can’t tell you how many bosses I’ve heard say I’m living check to check while im literally skipping lunches and missing bonuses because advisors are cutting my time but still charging customer to buff numbers. If I work I deserve to be paid I’m

The industry set it up that way. Do I try to be diplomatic? Yes, but it gets to a point…….people take advantage of the good will of techs. That’s why I don’t come in on my off day or spend any significant amount of time for “free” work. Soon that’ll be expected and I want to enjoy my life not work it away

Helping out really goes a long way, you can help someone out with a diag and then there will be a time where you need help pushing in a vehicle or whatever. Some help goes a long way!
