For Aquinas, all law comes from God: Eternal Law is God’s wisdom guiding creation, Divine Law is revealed in Scripture, Natural Law is written in the hearts of all people, and Human Law is created by societies but should be rooted in natural law. At its core, natural law teaches that we must “do good and avoid evil.” From this, Aquinas identified basic moral inclinations such as preserving life, reproducing and educating children, living peacefully in society, and seeking truth about God.
