As introduced pests, they periodically explode in numbers when conditions are right. They are vulnerable to native nematodes which usually keeps numbers down and there are strategic pest control methods available that harness this vulnerability by infecting the local population, but they're slow to work. They are attracted to light, so you can set up light traps with a solar light over a bucket buried in the ground and kept filled with water.
