If you’re thinking about a trip this autumn, here are tips, timing, and ideas to make the most of it. Color starts appearing in early October, especially at higher elevations (above ~3,000-3,500 ft). • The peak foliage is usually mid-October through late October. • Lower elevations and southern parts of the park often hold color a bit later — into early November, depending on weather. • Weather matters: cool nights, sunny days help colors deepen. Very hot, dry, or wet weather can dull or speed up the drop. 📍 Best Sections & Overlooks • There are 75 overlooks along the 105-mile Skyline Drive, many with east- or west-facing views. Some of the favorites for fall color are Tunnel Overlook, Pinnacles Overlook, Hazel Mountain, The Point, and the overlooks along the central section. Logistics & Tips for Visiting • Plan ahead — haul of visitors come in mid-October, especially weekends. • Visit on weekdays if possible. Mornings are better (to avoid crowds and get nicer light). • Use park webcams and the weekly Fall Color Report to monitor progress. • Make time for hikes.
