@visitbillingsmt: 📍Pompeys Pillar National Monument | 25 Miles from Billings, Montana At Pompeys Pillar National Monument, you can see William Clark’s signature etched into stone in 1806 - the only surviving on-site physical evidence of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. This sandstone butte was named by Clark in honor of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, Sacagawea’s son, whom he had given the nickname “Pomp.” Discover the exhibits at the Visitor Center, then follow the boardwalk up to Clark’s signature and to the lookout for sweeping views of the Yellowstone River and surrounding landscape. This monument preserves hundreds of markings, petroglyphs, and inscriptions - a living journal of the people and stories that shaped the American West. #VisitBillings #LewisAndClark #PompeysPillar #AmericanHistory #HistoricSites

SL :
People never talk about York, the enslaved man who was part of the expedition. York was promised freedom after the expedition. He made many contributions to the expedition.

I am a direct descendant of one of the members of the expedition - Alexander Willard. He was a blacksmith who slept on the job and was sent home to later be in the War of 1812.

There is also physical evidence of The Lewis & Clark Expedition at Travellers Rest near Lolo Pass in Montana. It is protected by the National Park Service and open to the public. Expedition members camped there twice, on the way to the Pacific and on the way back. An archeological report is on file at the university in Helena, Montana.
