Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) is one of the more controversial campaigns in the franchise, but I think a lot of the criticism comes down to expectations. After the huge scale of previous Modern Warfare games, MWIII tried something different with a shorter, more direct campaign. The story is probably the weakest part. Makarov is finally brought into the spotlight, but the campaign doesn’t spend enough time building him up, making the villain feel less impactful than he could have been. The ending also feels rushed and leaves some fans disappointed. However, the pacing is where MWIII actually shines. At around 5–6 hours, the campaign moves quickly and avoids unnecessary filler. Every mission feels like it has a purpose, and if you prefer shorter campaigns that don’t drag on, the length works in its favour. The problem wasn’t that it was short, it was that some story moments needed more time to breathe. The missions are a mix of classic Call of Duty action and the new open combat missions. While the open missions were divisive, they gave players more freedom and a different style of gameplay. The traditional missions still deliver the intense set pieces the series is known for. The weapons and gameplay are some of the strongest parts of MWIII. The gunplay feels smooth, movement is fast, and the large weapon selection makes every encounter feel different. Combined with the impressive graphics, the game still feels like a modern Call of Duty experience. The characters are also a highlight. Returning faces like Price, Ghost, Soap, and Gaz continue to carry the campaign, even if some characters deserved more screen time. The enemies are solid, but the boss encounters are forgettable compared to some of the best Call of Duty moments. Overall, Modern Warfare III is a very mixed game. It isn’t the strongest story in the series, and it could have expanded on Makarov and the ending, but its short runtime, fast pacing, great gameplay, and strong visuals make it an enjoyable campaign.
