We just discovered splits this morning. Never before. JD S780’s we had our rotor speed at 950. So we are going to try slowing it back down.

Year, variety, combine, conditions all play a role in canola splitting. Cx/tx New Holland’s are bad. But rotors will do it too. The fact you think crushing and splitting are the same thing has me confused.

We had issues this year with ours, 5% moisture and canola was cracking. We just kept turning down rotor, was very very hard chewing. Lots of late rain, really green straight cut straw.

I’ve got CX combines. They are terrible for that. Usually only have 2% dockage when it’s 6% dry

In Canada splits go back in with the seed at the crushers. They are dockage at elevator for seed export market. NewHolland CX combines are known for splitting seeds.

We run our 9870 rotor at 540 rpm. At 10% moisture in canola, The drier the canola the slower the rotor, did all our canola this fall at 380 rpm canola was almost to dry this for us.

We had 2 weeks of rain now canola sprouting. Sprouts make canola crack very easy

Slack in the clean grain elevator chain can cause cracked seeds. That’s one of the first things we look at if there’s any crack in the sample. Granted that’s not always the case, but knowing what and when to make adjustments is important too regardless of brand and model

Been dumping canola for a lot of years. never seen splits. Crushed yes. I call my customers and discuss some options for adjusting.

Splitting a seed, and extraction of oil are totally different. I guess it takes 40,000lbs to roll out a sample to check for green? Man the elevator workers must be strong.

Straight cut canola being hard to thread out of the pods. need it tight and faster then normal

Over dry canola, we were dealing with small amounts of splitting

super dry canola and straight cutting a pod shatter variety that needs a little extra threshing

Only time I’ve ever split it was years ago when we first started to straight cut it and the concaves were set too tight on a legacy case. Opened them up a little and it went away. Never had a problem on a flagship
