@santbran: 🚨 One of the biggest fears in selling 3D prints? It’s not niche, platform, or pricing… It’s copycats. #3DPrinting #BusinessTips #EntrepreneurMindset #MakerCommunity #ProductDesign
Paid a lot of money to get design protection for my product if I see anyone copying it I can threaten with legal action

people mistake open source vs simple copyright. they see you making it and think "well this community is open source no one should gatekeep anything" and for the most part this is true for people in the community but your trying to sell outside the community. Thanks for the advice though, basically "its going to happen so you shouldn't be to made when it does, nor should it stop you from creating" is the overall message i took away from this. personally for me its finding people to sell to, idk where I should go to show and sell my prints. people say online ads are it but looking at this app and fb marketplace or Craigslist 3d makers is an over saturated market now. any advice regarding that maybe?

I mean it might be cool to keep in mind the only reason youre able to 3d print in the first place is cuz ppl combined their efforts and shared resources.

I just give my designs away for free and focus on myself and my ideas being the product.

The main allure of 3d printer is that is has made manufacturing accessible. I think it goes against the spirit to be against reverse engineering. That said I do think however it should be done for personal use not for economic advantage otherwise you get into copyright

Can’t avoid it unless you get the thing patented. You can then sue them for copying but you really can’t avoid the reverse engineering. Well watch the AI, you can do nothing really 😂😂😂

Good take! Best of luck with your business.
If I may share my take, while we're at it...Perhaps you could still post the print with a license restricting commercial use? Customers who want the physical product will still buy it. I am almost 100% certain those who have a 3D printer and some CAD knowledge will try to do it themselves. This way at least you ensure you receive credit. Let me know if I am overlooking anything. Cheers!

would it be wrong to reverse engineer something for personal use? I run a farm and need a specific item to go in between my egg flats. It raises them up just enough so the eggs don't get crushed when they're bigger. someone made one and sells them for three times the price of the flat itself. I asked them and they wouldn't sell me an STL file and only makes physical products.I want some to use for my own personal use when I'm transporting 80 dozen eggs at a time.

I have people in my comments say they are going to reverse engineer my product, but I also sell the files. I haven't seen anyone do it yet though.

Unfortunately most ideas, even your own get ideas from some other products to make it better.

Reverse engineer stuff for fun and for a challenge. But don't upload it for free if the original creator didn't do so in the first place. That's my take, at least. But people disregarding that and uploading the design on website just so they can get some a few meaningless points which they will never cash in is, sadly, inevitable.
