FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS CONOR McGREGOR - ON THIS DAY! . #OnThisDay in 2017, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor clashed in the biggest fight of the modern era between the biggest stars in boxing and MMA history. This fight came to fruition almost out of nowhere as Conor would - on occasion - mention a potential fight with Mayweather as a throwaway comment to hype himself up as being levels above any other UFC fighter. However, this caught Floyd’s attention - prompting a back-and-forth on social media as well as sparking the belief that McGregor could actually secure the payday of a lifetime (because Dana White certainly wasn’t going to provide that) if he could convince the world that he stood a chance against the former pound-for-pound number one. Dana White initially dismissed the idea due to Conor’s UFC contract before attempting to make the fight as an addition to a UFC event once he realised the earning potential of the mega-fight. But as we all know, Floyd Mayweather only moves when he feels like everything is stacked in his favour (often to the detriment of the sport of boxing) and when he decided to go on the offensive in March 2017 to return the favour by pressuring McGregor to ‘sign the contract’ and saying he’d only come out of retirement to defeat Conor, it was only a matter of time until Dana White had to acquiesce and Conor McGregor signed on the dotted line to confirm what would become known as ‘The Money Fight’. Both Mayweather and McGregor would go on a viral international press campaign, holding several press conferences that were press conferences in name alone - as they were more reminiscent of URL rap battles with each fighter taking turns to insult one another and sway the increasingly excited audience in their favour. This was all done to give the impression that maybe - just maybe - an MMA fighter had a chance of making the greatest debut of all time by beating the man who couldn’t be defeated in 50 professional fights. The first three rounds actually began about as well as humanly possible as Conor threw everything he had at the ‘Money’ man, seemingly disproving all notions of Floyd taking him out within a round and therefore proving he could hang with one of the greatest of all time. Or so he thought. Mayweather, on the other hand, barely threw any punches and seemed to be stifling laughter at times. It quickly became clear that McGregor had only managed to ensnare himself in the masterful Mayweather trap as the Irishman rapidly fatigued over the following rounds - prompting Mayweather to drop the façade and to hunt Conor down as he had planned all along. He ditched the Philly Shell for a classic Mexican-style high guard and marched the younger man down, punishing Conor for each derogatory comment and each promise of defeating ‘TBE’. McGregor attempted to stay in the fight to the best of his ability but Floyd responded to this courage with more forward pressure and aggression - traits that hadn’t been seen in such a manner from Mayweather since the classic ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ days - hurting Conor on multiple occasions before ultimately forcing referee Robert Byrd to stop the fight in favour of ‘Money’ Mayweather after McGregor was rendered defenceless in the tenth round. Mayweather would remark that this fight (and more specifically, the knockout) was to make up for the lacklustre reception to his fight with Manny Pacquiao and to give Floyd the ceremonious retirement moment that was sorely missed in his last real fight against Andre Berto. This win took Floyd’s record to 50-0, a number that Floyd still parades to this day despite his 50th fight being against Conor McGregor - an MMA fighter who had never boxed before and has not boxed since. . . #mayweathermcgregor #mayweathervsmcgregor #floydmayweather #conormcgregor
