@dr_michael_renda: My son’s life story in 5 minutes from an NICU perspective. And if someone can help educate us on preterm labor, that would be amazing. Because why this happened remains a mystery to my family #fyp #doctor #nurse #student #education
The propranolol totally shrunk and faded my daughter’s hemangioma! No side effects, thank god. She was nicu the. started the propranolol at 8mos!

Hi NICU dad! NICU RN + NNP student here. Mom got Mag for baby’s neuroprotection and BMZ for lung maturation aka trying to stimulate surfactant production as early as possible. Sounds like mom has some cervical insufficiency. Caffeine to prevent apnea of prematurity 🫶🏻

NICU RN … so many parents (and NICU grads also listening) would benefit if you made more content like this. Fantastic breakdown!

How does a trauma surgeon parent of a NICU baby know that beta blockers can cause hypoglycemia yet my cardiologists looked at me like I had two heads when I brought it up to them + literature!?!?

caffeine is used to treat apnea of prematurity! its stimulant effects help remind his developing preemie brain to breathe.

I feel like besides the fact that this is very cute, it seems like a good way to cope through a pretty traumatic experience 👍🏻

Neo here - unfortunately, if there isn’t an infection identified with PTL, then in most cases we never know the cause. It’s also an extremely underfunded area of research, so there’s not a lot of emerging new information about the mechanisms causing PTL. NEC is also most commonly seen between 28-34 weeks corrected gestational age, which we think most likely has to do with the developmental stage of the gut during this period - another area where we need way more research being done!

NICU reporting in, what is your biggest question as that’s a lot to unpack. Are you wanting to know about beta blockers for hemangiomas? I think outcome and neurosurgery questions is better left in the realm of those that are following you in your circle of care. But I can assist in pointing you in the right direction.

As a NICU nurse, I applaud you for this explanation! As a mom, I want to give you and mama the biggest hug because no amount of medical knowledge takes away the fear and helplessness of seeing your baby go through all of this 😢

Did they do placental pathology? Many times it’s the result of some sort of infection.

Thanks for the education but Kindly clarify something here for me. Does beta blocker mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia or cause hypoglycemia?

Genetic counselor here - might consider a meeting with pediatric general genetics! Probably nothing, but if you’re triple checking all your bases it’s a good one to check off.
