Law students and grads, I need to give you some tough love. 💖 I know you think you’re working hard to land your first job after law school. But if all you’re doing is applying to open roles on LinkedIn, Seek or a firm’s careers page, you’re only doing about 15% of the work. The market has always been stacked against graduates. Too many students and not enough jobs. That was true when I graduated and it’s still true now. The universities promised you a degree, not a job. The rest is now on you. Here’s what real effort looks like: ✨ Building a spreadsheet to track outreach. ✨ Reaching out to alumni, tutors, lecturers and mentors and asking for introductions to people in the industry whether they are hiring or not ✨ Sending DMs on LinkedIn and asking for coffee catch-ups ✨ Printing your CV and walking it into firms and chambers (I did this in 2010 over 180 times) ✨ Picking up the phone and calling ✨ Circling back when you’ve worked through your list and doing it again I’m not saying it’s easy. I’m not saying it’ll be your dream job. It probably won’t be. But anything in the industry and ‘as close to the sun’ as possible is worth your time. No experience is ever wasted. If it were easy, everyone would have a job. But what many of you think is hard and what will actually move the needle are two very different things. Making sure your CV looks sharp and applying to jobs online is the bare minimum. Everyone is already doing that. The question you need to ask yourself is: what are you doing to stand out? I’ve created endless free content on this. My Big Sis Briefings and TikTok playlists are full of step-by-step advice on networking, job hunting and breaking into law. I even gave the exact script I would use on a cold call to a law firm. The resources are there but the action is up to you. I can’t do that part for you. So, if you’re serious, stop hiding behind the easy applications and start doing the work that makes you memorable. How badly do you actually want it? Patience, Humility and Effort are always rewarded in the end. 💖 #careerbigsis #bigsis #careeradvice
